Stuff I Don't Understand

1. Why so many new television comedy shows are so mean. What happened to The Cosby Show ethos? If the zeitgeist of the 2010's is sarcastic meanness, count me out.

2. The comments section of news websites, YouTube, and other mass public websites. Absolutely horrifying. A major science magazine website recently closed its comments completely because too many wackadoodles were posting. How did things devolve so badly? Or am I too optimistic about mankind? I've always thought the wackadoodles were the minority.

3. Why God invented fleas. Seriously? Are there not enough pests in life? We have to have fleas, too?

4. Why God invented (or caused a kind and portly housewife to invent) apple fritters. We don't deserve such deliciousness.

5. Why my favorite stamping magazine is moving to purely electronic publishing. I hate reading magazines on my Nook, my big laptop is not in my craft area, and this irritates me hugely. I don't care if it's better for the bottom line to eliminate print issues. Print is good.

6. Why there's a competitive cooking show on which children cook and pitch fits. As George said recently, "I think cooking shows have jumped the shark." Amen, honey.

7. Why I didn't start a book club years ago. My friend Tina started one, and it's beyond fun. What a marvelous group of women she pulled together from all sorts of places in her life. I totally love it and appreciate that she included me. I've met new people, read new books, and enjoyed the discussions so very much!

8. Why George feels it's never too early to have a plan for the day. Yes. It's way too early when I haven't had at least three cups of coffee. Duh.

9. Why dogs have such incredibly sensitive noses and yet enjoy the most disgusting smells. Things stink for a reason, Daisy.

10. Bullying. An adult I know admitted that she's being bullied online, especially on Facebook. She's a mature grown-up and baffled by it all, but it's got to hurt. Bullying isn't limited to playgrounds and teens. I just don't understand how grown-ups think it's at all acceptable.

11. How my baby got so big that he's going on a school trip to DC next week without me. When did that happen?

Now it's your turn. What don't you understand? What leaves you shaking your head in bafflement? Please do share!

  1. So many these are so true!

My daughter just returned from a DC trip (during the shutdown, ugh). Thankfully she had a cell phone and she texted every day - I think it made it so much easier on both of us. We just got phones over the summer and now I don't know how I lived without them!

  2. One big thing I don't understand happened at work. We rent out space for exercise classes. The target group is healthy seniors. One teacher said I should let her use the facility for free because she wasn't going to make enough money to teach the class. She makes about $500 a month for teaching one day a week for an hour. We charge her $55 a month (not per day but for the whole month) to use a big air conditioned space. I asked her if I gave everyone free rent, how would I be able to keep the building up and running? She said that was my problem. There are costs to doing busy but some feel it shouldn't apply to them. I just don't understand.

  3. Lisa, I don't understand that either.

  4. I don't understand why we continue to let politicians spend so much money and air time on opponent degradation rather than coming up with a way to just get the facts from each about what they believe in and would like to do to move that platform along.

    1. The paper in Wichita KS once ran a section before an election that allowed each candidate to summarize his/her position on issues relevant to the office for which they were running. The paper included everything from the presidential election to all the little local elections for school board, county commissioner, etc. It was the only election I've ever voted in for which I felt at all prepared and informed. It felt wonderful!

  5. 1. Reality TV (which, btw, I don't watch, except for Duck Dynasty. They amuse me and I like that it ends with family around the table and prayer). I don't understand the appeal or even the concept. 'Cause what little I've seen, it isn't like any reality that I've lived!!
    2. Speaking of reality shows, how in the BEEJEEBEES do these people become "famous"? For what?!! Willingness to take off their clothes, get plastered and in general, make complete fools of themselves? And why do people LOVE watching that?!!
    3. Fall Fairs. Every teacher dreads it. Every parent who has ever been involved dreads it. And in reality (ha!) we are the ones who spend all the money for the fundraiser (in donations and buying it all back at the fair). Why don't we just hand over a check and call it good?!
    4. How watching and listening to high school students perform music praising can bring tears to my eyes each and every time.
    5. How come every other person on the planet can go "vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, or what ever the latest health craze is" and lose weight but I do it and NADDA.
    6. How my oldest baby is now old enough to have to start thinking about what COLLEGES he may like to apply to??
    7. Why it takes the prospect of having people over (even HS kids for an informal "party" to make me panic and clean my house? Why don't I have that desire to just keep it neat otherwise?

I'm sure I'll come back often today as more baffling questions invade my train of thought and distract me from the panic cleaning!! ha!

  6. I agree with everything on your list!

    1) The women in my family get together once a month for "ladies night". Why does it take people two weeks to rsvp and answer an email?
    2) Coupons, frequent user/guest/buyer cards. Why do I have to shop on your time schedule and not mine? I hate expiration dates! My schedule never lets me get there and use a meaningful discount when I need it. And I hate buying something and then finding out I paid too much because I could have used a coupon.
    3) Charities. I make a donation and then I am inundated with requests for more money. And then many of them sell my name to someone else! It makes me want to make anonymous cash donations. (Which I am seriously considering)
    4) Magazines. You buy a subscription and they start hounding you the very next month to renew. I recently decided not to buy any more magazines that will get mailed to my house. If I want it I will check it out of the library.
    5) Inconsiderate Drivers. Living in a large metro area this may be a bigger issue. But, it amazes me the people who will cut you off, speed up so you can't merge, insist on six cars from one side merging instead of taking turns or turn out of a parking lot right in front of you when there is no one behind you!
Last but not least ~ Murphy's law.
Why do you never have the right color of thread, cardstock, ink, paint, wrapping paper, cardigan or socks in the drawer? : )

    1. Charities...I've limited my giving to just a few charities for just that reason. I like giving to various things through church...our church has lots of missions activity, plus the United Methodist Committee on Relief is huge and diverse and allows me to feel good about the giving. Also, a plug for Heifer International. They are awesome, do not sell your name, and will contact you only by mail if you don't want phone solicitations.

  7. Something my nephew and neices have done that I totally don't understand. Their father was never a part of their lives, even denied that the youngest one was his. Never helped in anyway with support or taking care of them. Now each one of them has named one of their children after him. Why should a man, who took no responsibility for his off spring be given that honor? Why not the uncles who babysat, took them to their soccer games, taught them how to change a tire, took them camping, fixed the leaky sink, came over in the middle of night to check everything was OK in the backyard. Why not the men in their lives who were and are always there for them even now that they are adults?

    1. Lisa, I don't understand, either, except that they may be longing for a relationship that never existed, a chance to do over, as it were. But that's just a thought.
