Words, Words, Words: A Tale of Two Children

"I hated school. Even to this day, when I see a school bus it's just depressing to me. The poor little kids." Dolly Parton

"I loved school so much that most of my classmates considered me a dork." Natalie Portman

Which were you, a lover of school or a hater of school? I loved school, everything about school...except getting picked on.

  1. First of all - handsome boys!!! I never hated school. But I'm not sure I "loved" it either. I liked it. Had lots of friends. Even some of the teachers were friends. My grades were ok. Not the brightest bulb in the package. There were some college classes that I loved, though. Probably some of those I really DID NOT like, too. I was not picked on but I didn't take kindly to anyone picking on my friends. Slugged a person one time in elementary school that was teasing my overweight friend. (I'm not proud that I resorted to such a thing.)

  2. Fair to say I endured school. My two boys are the same as your two. The eldest LOVES school and the youngest LOATHES it. Fortunately, we have another two weeks hols in the UK. Yay! Lx

  3. Wonderful looking boys! I liked school, but i especially LOVED buying school supplies. New crayons, and a new tablet waiting to be filled -- such potential! My husband teaches at the college level, and my son is in college, but I still buy them new crayons in the falll. BTW-has anone noticed that Crayola crayons starting smelling different last year?

  4. Your boys are adorable. I LOVED school. New school supplies and clothes! Covering my text books with covers made from paper bags (and then decorating, of course)! The excitement of the first day of school and meeting my new teachers, and being even happier when my best friends were in my class! Yeah, I was a dork who liked school. Now that I work in academia, I don't like the beginning of classes so much because it means we lose the quietness of campus in the summer.

  5. Love the mug shot :) Gorgeous big brown eyes! I loved school. I love to learn new things and to this day, I am most pleased when I learn something new every day. I was a total jock and having so many sports to get involved with was fabulous :)

  6. Susan, your boys are so cute! I hope they are having a great back to school week.
I'm pretty sure I liked school for the most part, probably because that's were my friends were. Even though our summer break was "only" around 6 weeks long, I was always glad to go back to school.
In elementary school I was pretty shy, but I did like to do the school work.

  7. I was a 'Jack'. LOVED school and learning just by listening to my teachers. And yes, I was a dork and got picked on, too. My son has an awesome teacher this year, and she may turn my 'Nick' into a 'Jack'. There is always hope to add another nerd to our family!

  8. I'm with Susie, neither hated nor loved but liked. I didn't do wonderfully well but that was possibly due to lack of study. Had a great group of friends, and we seemed to sail under the radar of bullying.

  9. Love those pictures!! And loved, loved, loved school.

As the last of 6 children, I remember a day in grade school when my sister one year older and I were getting ready for school. It was a dreary miserable winter day and my dear mom who didn't like being alone, I think, wanted to keep us home from school - just for fun. We insisted on going, saying we'd miss this or that, etc. Poor mom!

And I even remember in the 7th grade, I was so excited to get my textbooks that I carried them all home the first day - just to look at them.

I could go on and on . . . I was lucky. Loved it. Loved my teachers. I had those tough moments, too, but they pale in comparison to the joy.

    TFS, Susan!

  11. Your boys are gorgeous! I loved school when I started (I attended an independent, "hippie" school grades 1 - 5). I like school for a few years after that. Then I really didn't like school at all. When I went to university I rediscovered my passion for learning, somehow school had squashed that out of me.

  12. Loved school . . . the stationery, paper, pens, the order, friends, activities (even though there were one or two subjects that were not my favourite). Life was easy. None of my kids seem to have the same view!

  13. I loved school, but ironically made my self sick worrying about the first day every year through elementary school. Luckily, got over that in Jr. high and high school.

    Your boys are precious.

  14. I was such a dork that I was pretty oblivious to the fact that people thought I was a dork. I was that kid who raised her hand every time the teacher asked a question. The kid who went to the public library to find math books to check out because she ran out of problems to solve in her text book. And I was a band geek, too. As I told the kids on the elementary school math team a couple of years ago, "the nerds always win." (This was in response to one of the super-smart math whiz kids saying that his career aspiration was to be a major league football player.) The only thing that I hated about school was getting up in the morning.

  15. I loved school mainly because I could escape from my mother and her abuse but also loved the learning part too. I wasn't the brightest spark - just average except in English - and was picked on at times. The only part I hated was, like Chris Simon, getting up in the morning but I also had a dread of being late and that over rode the inclination to stay in bed!

  16. I'm with Jack - loved going to school every day! Runs in the family - I have a niece who cried all day and could not be comforted when she discovered after her first week in school that there was no school on Saturday or Sunday!
