Words, Words, Words from Umberto Eco et alii

"I love the smell of book ink in the morning." Umberto Eco

"Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counsellors, and the most patient of teachers." Charles W. Eliot

"Any ordinary man can...surround himself with two thousand books...and thenceforward have at least one place in the world in which it is possible to be happy." Augustine Birrell

"When I get a little money I buy books; and if any is left I buy food and clothes." Erasmus

What words do you love about books?

  1. I admit it, no book quotes on the tip of my tongue, but when I googled "quotes about books" this one tickled me:

Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside of a dog it's too dark to read. ~Groucho Marx

  2. A couple of quotes that work for me...
You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me. C.S. Lewis
A room without books is like a body without a soul. G.K. Chesterton
I was unfamiliar with the Eco quote; thank you for sharing it!

  3. In my garden I spend my days; in my library I spend my nights. My interests are divided between my geraniums and my books. With the flower I am in the present; with the book I am in the past. I go into my library, and all history unrolls before me.
    ~Alexander Smith

I have to add that I love the FEEL of a book in my hands. Somehow the Kindles (sp?) do not appeal to me at all. What a comfort to climb into a tub of warm bath water with a great book! Great post, Susan!
